RIP Don LaFontaine

September 2nd, 2008

Many people didn’t know his name but almost everyone recognizes his voice. Don LaFontaine, the voiceover master, passed away yesterday Monday September 1, 2008. For all those including myself who enjoyed movie trailers almost as much as actual movies, this is a true loss. You’ll be missed Don.

Here are a few links to celebrate his memory:

Optimal Entrepreneurial Age?

August 15th, 2008

One question I ask myself from time to time is “what’s the optimal age to be an entrepreneur?”. I did a bit of research and found this very interesting article on the subject by Marc Andreessen, best known for being co-creator of the world’s first widely used web browser, Mosaic.

Great reading for anyone interested in the idea that entrepreneurship is affected by age.

Note: In case you miss it, there’s also a link to this great response to Andreessen’s article at the bottom.

5 Steps to Beat Paralyzing Entrepreneurial Fear (And To See Its Silver Lining)

August 8th, 2008

Most entrepreneurs and particularly young entrepreneurs struggle at one point or another with a potential gamekiller - fear. Fear can come in many forms and for some may not show up for some time, but it almost certainly comes. In some cases fear even comes before you’ve even lifted a finger to do some work or lifted a pen to write a plan.

Fear in this case is not the occasional doubt that comes when considering one operational decision versus another. The red billboard versus the blue one, for instance. Doubts in the mind this case are often healthy internal debates which hopefully lead to better decisions and preferred outcomes.

What we’re really looking at here is bona fide, engine-seizing, deer-in-the-headlights, paralysis inducing fear. It’s the sort that makes you question whether you have what it takes to make it and can derail even the most well planned effort. In some cases it can stop you before you even begin. This is the sort of fear that keeps you up at night, feeling terrible, worrying about your ability to run your business or to begin the first steps in the service of your business idea. If you’ve never experienced it before in business, you will and if you have already then you’ll know what I’m talking about.

Like almost all challenges, this one can be used, with a little perspective and effort, to our advantage. The following are five steps to deal with crippling entrepreneurial fear and to turn it into an unlikely help: Read the rest of this entry »
